{"id":2331,"date":"2016-03-19T10:38:23","date_gmt":"2016-03-19T14:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dansdigitaldive.com\/web\/?p=2331"},"modified":"2016-03-19T10:38:23","modified_gmt":"2016-03-19T14:38:23","slug":"securing-your-android","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dansdigitaldive.com\/web\/archives\/2331","title":{"rendered":"Securing your android"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2332 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dansdigitaldive.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Andrioid1.gif?resize=150%2C112&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Andrioid1\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" \/>Remember the good ol&#8217; days when all we had to worry about was our phone ringing while we were on the can?\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t have to worry about being embarrassed by our cellphones, it was, just a phone.\u00a0 Today, my phone is smarter than I am.\u00a0 Now, I know what your thinking&#8230;.you thought it was just you!\u00a0 But sadly, I too have been embarrassed by a text sent without being properly screened, by a human, by me.\u00a0 My phone&#8217;s spellcheck makes corrections faster than I can unfix them..which results in some pretty stupid sounding texts.<\/p>\n<p>This got me to thinking.\u00a0 You know how we have security software on our PCs.\u00a0 I have seen anti-virus and other anti malware for phones; but how do we secure our phones from hackers and other seedy people?\u00a0 Our friends over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/blog\/10-things\/10-security-measures-you-should-take-with-your-android-device\/?ftag=TREabb1cd6&amp;bhid=22303170812069261878367330317768\">Tech Republic <\/a>offer some advice.<\/p>\n<p>First on their list (and mine): Passwords!\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Passwords are the last line of defense to protect your device<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 As important as our electronic leashes are, having a strong password seems simple enough, but how many of you (read US) use really stupid reminders?\u00a0 My cat&#8217;s favorite password is&#8230;.ready?&#8230;.&#8221;password.&#8221;\u00a0 He is asking for trouble.\u00a0 I keep telling him, make your password tough.\u00a0 The more complicated it is, the harder it is to hack.\u00a0 Of course, this has it&#8217;s own issue for those of us that are memory impaired.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">For those of you like my cat&#8230;yeah..my cat, who have a tough time remembering things.\u00a0 I&#8217;d recommend getting a password manager.\u00a0 There are a bunch out there, but it seems like <a href=\"http:\/\/features.en.softonic.com\/which-password-manager-should-you-use-1password-dashlane-or-lastpass\">1Password, Lastpass, and Dashlane <\/a>all work well.\u00a0 Depending upon your circumstances, your mileage may vary.<\/p>\n<p>The next important tidbit&#8230;keep your phone updated!\u00a0 Updates help close security flaws.\u00a0 Like the Nike commercial used to say: &#8220;Just do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of &#8220;Just do it.&#8221;\u00a0 Make sure to use two-factor authentication on everything possible.\u00a0 As a primer, Dashlane and Lastpass are both two-factor compatible.\u00a0 \u00a0I&#8217;m new to the two-factor authentication.\u00a0 So I&#8217;ll have to give more feedback when the time comes. For now though, you have a reference.\u00a0 I tend to go more for the encryption; but I may have to revisit this.<\/p>\n<p>I often find myself at Starbucks&#8230;surfing their internet (I&#8217;m a cheap bastard, why should I pay?).\u00a0 One thing even the technology challenged Dr. D doesn&#8217;t do is send (or receive) sensitive info while on a public Wi-Fi (with no password).\u00a0 Never check your bank on an open Wi-Fi.
