Would you like to know the sad truth?  None of these actions will prevent gun\nviolence.  Together they may have a small\nimpact; but we cannot rely upon legislation to solve our problems.  We: you and I, have to solve our problems.  No, I\u2019m not saying you have to go kill\nsomeone or turn your neighbor into the police. \nWhat I am saying is that the collective we: you, me, AND our neighbors,\nall have a shared responsibility, and we should have a shared value system, and\nthat\u2019s where the wheels fall off this train, our country no longer has a shared\nvalue system.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our current leader does not help this, his rhetoric is divisive\nat times, he should just turn off his Twitter account, or at least wait an hour.  Unfortunately, I don\u2019t see anything better on\nthe Democratic side, most of them are just too far to the left for my comfort.  I\u2019d like to see someone in the middle \u2013 someone\nthat would put the country first, and not themselves or the party, but alas, I\nask for too much.  Sorry \u2018bout that, back\nto our topic\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am a Christian.  The\nparticular flavor doesn\u2019t matter.  Remember,\nat the beginning of this article, I said I\u2019d return to how faith comes into the\nconversation?  Yep, we\u2019re there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I recently read a book by Bishop Robert Barron, \u201cLetter to a Suffering Church<\/a>.\u201d  If you haven\u2019t I encourage you to read it,\nwhile it is mainly about the Catholic Church and the current sexual abuse scandal,\nit does have some relevance to our conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bishop has tracked, for a number of years, the\npercentage of the US population that does not associate with a faith, and he\nhas found\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1970s, roughly 5% of our population didn\u2019t associate with\na particular faith, by the 1990\u2019s that number grew to roughly 6%, but recently\nthe percentage exploded to nearly 25%!  For\nthose under the age of thirty, the percentage is roughly 40%.  40% of our population does not associate with\na faith, a common set of values.  That my\nfriend, is a problem.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I once wrote a paper for college, that compared the major\nreligions, and came to the conclusion that each of the religions was trying to\nlift its populace to a \u201cbetter place.\u201d \nSome call it Heaven, some call it \u201cNirvana,\u201d and so on.  The end location\u2019s name is immaterial, what\nmattered is the life you lived and how you interacted with those around you.  (I\u2019m sure some will interject the high\njacking of Islam here, but that is not the context of this conversation). No\nmatter the religion, there are two aspects: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Faith Based: People should behave and shared  beliefs (i.e. the core beliefs).<\/li>
  2. Action Based: A set of ethics that rules how one\nshould live their life and interact with their neighbor.  <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Some common threads between religions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Love \u2013 \u201cthe golden rule,\u201d treat others as you would like to\nbe treated.  The Dalai Lama<\/a> felt\nCompassion is what religions have in common, the natural capacity of the human\nheart to feel concern for and connection with another being \u2013 constitutes a basic\naspect of our nature shared by all human beings, as well as being the\nfoundation of our happiness.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Faith in an unseen God. This also provides boundaries for communities to develop. People of the same belief system tend to come together, many faiths preach that serving and helping others, regardless of their personal beliefs<\/mark><\/em>, is the right thing to do.  In that way, religion or faith also promotes acts of selflessness, humanity, charity, and responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
