My stance on Health Care Reform.

Good morning boys and girls! You may have noticed that I haven’t been paying as close attention to politics as I used to. There is a lot of discussion going on about the proposed changes to the Health Care System. The topic I’d like to tackle today is, should contraceptive and abortion coverage be mandated to be covered by the federal government? Well…I’m torn on the issue.

Before I start, my religious views are not even being considered for my little chat today, they are my personal beliefs and I would never push them on any of you, so I request you don’t push your religious views on to me (but a discussion is always fun).

My personal belief system comes in and asks; “Where is the personal responsibility here?” It seems today as if no one is ever responsible for their actions anymore; blame your shortcomings on addiction, your father, your mother, your dog (etc.). I am responsible for my actions, why should I have to pay for your lack of judgment? I, obviously, do not support my employer being mandated to supply this type of coverage, if a person wants that type of coverage; they are free to seek it, there are many agencies and non-profits that will help a young woman. I have an issue with providing “contraceptive services” as part of an insurance plan, I already have a mother and father who taught me about the birds and the bees. I don’t want to pay for somebody’s lack of judgement, go to Walgreen’s, and buy a package of condoms or that gel stuff women use; and don’t forget to take your birth control pill (which IS covered by insurance, except for your co-pay).

Now, this is not to say there are not overriding circumstances. For instances of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother, there is an obvious need of coverage, and these cases are currently covered by most insurances. But I think a line has been crossed when the insurance coverage can be used instead of proper judgement; (See the White House fact sheet). If you’d like to read a good FAQ about it, check this out. I look forward to the discussions….
